How It Works
No telephone line required. NOT satellite! The wireless Internet "signal" is sent from our transmitters (Access Points) on top of the mountains (or relay stations) to your roof-top receiver (Subscriber Module). From there, the signal travels through a CAT5e ethernet cable to a router.

There needs to be a clear line-of-sight from the Subscriber Module and an Access Point. The signal does not travel through trees, buildings, hills, etc.

NOTE: The wireless Internet equipment supplied at installation must be returned to us upon termination of your Service Agreement or you will be charged in accordance with the terms of the Service Agreement.


About Our Transmitters
We have four mountaintop transmitters (Vaca Hills, Mt. Vaca South, Mt. Vaca North and Berryessa Peak) and three repeater stations (Solar Hills area, Estate Drive and English Hills). Each transmitter has a 25-mile radius broadcast range.

We do everything we can to minimize network downtime, however, it happens. We provide a record of downtime and which network was affected, 2.4GHz or 5.8GHz. For a history of our network uptime, please click here.

Network and Bandwidth
The network uses top-of-the-line Motorola hardware and software. We use the Motorola Canopy system to deliver wireless Internet service to our customers. The network is fed by eight bonded T1 lines, providing up to 12 Mbps shared download speeds. As the need arises, we can continue to increase bandwidth by adding new T1 lines.

The mountaintop transmitters have 4-8 hour battery backup systems in the event of a PG&E power failure.


5.7GHz Service: Installation Overview
On the day of installation, we will mount the receiver on your rooftop or best signal location with clear line-of-sight to our transmitter and staple up to 100-feet of outdoor-rated CAT5e cable along the outside of the house, drill through the wall, and into the house to your computer and router. Additional CAT5e cable (beyond 100-feet), "wall fishing" the cable or installing walk jacks incur an extra charge and must be pre-arranged with the installer. For liability insurance reasons, Installers cannot do attic or sub-floor crawls.

If you prefer to run the ethernet cable through your attic or sub-floor yourself, we can provide you with the necessary CAT5e ethernet cable. Standard installation and activation charges still apply.

The router will then be configured to work on our network, and we will verify successful Internet access from the router and one computer.

IMPORTANT: Since we do not know the history or condition of your computer(s), we cannot be responsible for ensuring Internet access from all your computer(s). We will make an effort to connect all computers connected directly to the router or connecting to the router via a wireless network connection. Should you need computer repairs or virus/spyware removal, please contact a computer technician.

What's Included in a Standard Installation

Outdoor-rated CAT5e Ethernet Cable

Motorola Subscriber Module (and Reflector Dish)

Our installers are experienced, independent contractors who have been working in the wireless Internet, construction and/or satellite TV industries for years.

Every standard installation includes parts and labor:

  • Up to 100 feet of outdoor-rated ethernet CAT5e cable. Additional cable charged at $0.50/foot.

  • The roof-top receiver (Subscriber Module), reflector dish and power supply. Equipment is owned by Yolo Wireless Internet (leased) and MUST be returned upon cancellation of service.

  • A wireless B/G router (or $50 credit if you have one).

  • Optional email account(s). All email accounts come with anti-spam filtering and anti-virus email scanning.

  • Activation on the network.

  • FREE software updates for the antenna and routers.

NOTE: Additional charges may apply for special installations (e.g. pallet, extension pole, wall jack, additional cabling beyond 100-ft, etc.).


What You Need to Have
Wireless Internet is not the same as wireless networking. Wireless Internet refers to the "signal" between our transmitter(s) and your roof-top Subscriber Module. The wireless router is a component of wireless networking. Although we may provide you with the wireless router, you are responsible for any wireless network cards for those computer(s) connecting wirelessly to the router. The wireless router has four (4) wired ports which can be used to connect computers directly to the router. A typical setup is where one desktop is connected directly to the wireless router while other desktops/laptops are connected via a built-in or wireless card (laptops) or internal or USB network adapter (desktops).
